Program Description

The minor in Emergency Management at Austin Peay State University is designed around the core competency areas identified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The program provides students with broad exposure to the knowledge and skills required by first responders, emergency managers, and public administrators responsible for preparing for, mitigating, responding to, and recovering from natural disasters, technological hazards, and other human-caused emergencies. Students develop an understanding of the full range of threats facing communities in the United States, methods for identifying and managing vulnerabilities, and the principles of hazard mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The minor also emphasizes communication and coordination across organizations and jurisdictions, as well as leadership, strategic planning, resource management, and the political and administrative dimensions of emergency management.
