Department of Sociology and Community Development Location: McCord Bldg., Room 205 Phone: 931-221-7540 Website: www.apsu.edu/sociology The Sociology and Community Development major exposes students to the systematic study of society in all of its forms ranging from the interaction of individuals to the dynamics of large organizations. The Sociology and Community Development major emphasizes the theoretical and applied aspects of the field. Students majoring in sociology will be able to apply a sociological perspective in a wide variety of careers in such sectors as research, business, healthcare administration, criminal justice, social services, community health and government. Since the discipline involves investigative skills and working with diverse groups, sociology also provides a valuable foundation for careers in journalism, education, politics, public relations or public administration. Students majoring in sociology are provided the necessary preparation to pursue future graduate work in the social sciences ranging from the M.A. to the Ph.D. and the APSU Department of Sociology and Community Development has a strong track record for placing undergraduates in top graduate programs in sociology and related social science disciplines. All majors are required to complete a departmental exit exam during the semester preceding graduation.
